Ceiling Fan Installation Steps

Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling.

Tower fan kris. Thread your wires through the trim ring of the canopy if necessary and the down rod. Sit the downrod in place on the top of the fan body. Ceiling fan blades must be at least 18 inches away from wall doors cabinets and posts.

First a mounting bracket is installed on the electrical box then the bulk of the ceiling fan is slid into place in the mounting bracket. The downrod is the long metal pipe that is used to distance the fan from the ceiling. Take the bulb shape fitting that is on the top part of the downrod and attach it to the mounting bracket that is on the ceiling.

Then run the main wires through it. Install your ceiling fan. Use wire nuts to attach the fans black or colored wire and white wire to matching wires in the ceiling box.

Tighten the locking screws around the base of the downrod until it is securely attached to the fan body. The basic installation of a ceiling fan is no different from that of a standard light fixture. Use a flat surface to put the canopy on the ceiling fan downrod.

Nearly all ceiling fans install in two steps. Insert the cotter and clevis pins to the downrod to connect it to the base of the fan. Flush mount ceiling fans have the wires threaded through to the top housing.

This eliminates the need for holding a heavy ceiling fan motor assembly above head while simultaneously trying to screw it into place. If you are installing a fan on a high or sloped ceiling you may need a longer downrod to maintain blade clearance. Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 7 feet above the floor.
